Change Your Life With Chia

When you hear “chia,” you may think of “Chia Pets.” These are clay figures sold in the US that support the growth of chia sprouts. But chia has a much longer history as a medicinal herb. It originated in Mexico and was cultivated by the Aztecs. Supposedly, the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incans used chia as a staple of their diet and as an energy food. The chia seeds are “super” because, like a superfruit, they deliver the maximum amount of nutrients with minimum calories. They are also perfect in oatmeal and puddings and they make an ideal addition to baked goods including breads, cakes and biscuits.

As the saying goes BACON makes everything better. Who doesn’t love a nice, big crispy strip of bacon? Lord knows I do but with a healthier leash on life I have traded that oh so love of bacon with turkey bacon. Well that’s what I thought until I read this here article. And boy was I surprised! It is found that a mix of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also note honey as very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects which is also a plus.Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, put it on toast instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol and could potentially save one from heart attack. Also, even if you have already had an attack studies show you could be kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of cinnamon honey strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients can benefit by taking one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken daily even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain — and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder….who knew?

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol-could be cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses, and it’s delicious too!

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also is said to clear stomach ulcers from its root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

CinnamonIMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.

WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour beforebreakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

BANANA – interesting FACTS

Growing up my Grandma keep plenty of bananas in the kitchen. Not to forget the bucket loads of apples & oranges as well. If we wanted a snack, we got fruit – POINT BLANK. Anything else was not an option but over the years I discovered that I despise bananas. Still love apples & oranges but that banana, NO WAY JOSE’. I didn’t want nothing to do with it. Until about a year ago I found myself buying them again. And to my surprise I was enjoying them. I eat them as a snack. I eat them in my green smoothies. I’m like monkey loco for bananas. I just can’t get enough of them. They are always the first in the fruit bowl to disappear.  So one morning while surfing social media I ran across this article on the health benefits of the banana. It’s so packed with vital info (some I knew & some I didn’t) I just had to share. Hmmmm, I guess Grandma was on to something and as the saying goes “Grandma knows best.”

Mason Jar Breakfast Parfait

Breakfast Parfaits

I love breakfast but there are times when I don’t feel the desire to whip out the pot & pan. Or when I simply crave something other than my usual “Green Smoothie”. This recipe is a great way to eat on the go & still be healthy. It also makes for a perfect snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup low fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup granola, any variety
  • 1 cup washed & cut seasonal fruit (blueberries, strawberries, figs, peaches, raspberries).
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 1 pint size mason jar w/ lid
  • spoon

Instructions

In a mason jar add the yogurt and then fruit. Drizzle honey on top. Add granola last so it stays crisp. (Optional: Sprinkle parfait with a little cinnamon). Don’t forget to grab a spoon.

¼ cup piquillo peppers, chopped

½ cup fresh spinach

Greek Pasta Salad

2 tbsp easy lemon vinaigrette (see below)

1 cup cherry tomatoes

¼ cup red onion, chopped

1 cup cucumber, chopped

½ cup feta, crumbled

2 oz rigatoni, cooked

½ cup mixed greens

½ cup fresh mint, chopped

Easy Lemon Vinaigrette

(will make enough for 3-4 mason jars)

Juice from one large lemon

½ cup olive oil

Good pinch of salt

Couple of grinds of black pepper

Shake all ingredients together in a small container.

Speaking of shaking, try to remember to leave room at the top of each jar. Don’t worry if you get a little over zealous (I usually am!) with your ingredients though—just shake the jar like crazy when you’re ready for lunch, eat a few bites, then shake some more once there’s a bit more room!

Take It Inside: 3 (Not So Boring) Treadmill Workouts

It’s that time of year when everyone make New Year Resolutions, Think Healthier, Get Physical and Take Their Fitness Regimens to the next level. The treadmill or should I say dreadmill? can be a real drag, but I find that using a plan to guide my workout keeps me on track, interested, and motivated, so the time flies by. Here are three (not so boring) treadmill workouts to get you going. So Here’s To A Happy New Year &  A Happy New You!

1. Walk-Jog-Sprint
This is one of my go-to workouts when I’m dreading my time on the treadmill. It keeps me guessing for a solid 45 minutes, so it’s over before I know it! And I feel like I’ve really worked hard when I’m done. I’m almost always a sweaty mess at the end!

Walk at 4.0 at 7.5 incline for 4 minutes
Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 5 minutes
Repeat walk and jog twice
Jog at 6.5 at 2.0 incline for 3 minutes
Run at 7.0 at 1.0 incline for 3 minutes
Sprint at 8.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
Jog at 6.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
Sprint at 8.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
Run at 7.0 at 1.0 incline for 1 minute
Jog at 6.5 at 1.0 incline for 3 minutes
Cool down (walk) for 5 minutes

Total time: 45 minutes

2. Roll Play
Changing my speed every two minutes keeps my interest and motivation high while running on the treadmill. I covered a little over 5.5 miles in 60 minutes during this workout. There’s a walking interval from minutes 30 to 35, so this workout can easily be shortened to 35 minutes if needed.

When I’m short on time, I like to challenge myself to run three miles as fast as I can. I love a challenge, so trying to beat my previous mile gets me excited about my workout. If you’re not into running, a three-mile power-walking challenge also will work!

Warm up for 10 minutes (walk or slow jog)
Run one mile
Recovery: two-minute walk
Run second mile. Try to improve your time from the first mile.
Recovery: two-minute walk
Run third mile. Try to improve your time from the previous two miles.
5 minute cool down (walk or slow jog)

DIY Monday: Homemade Cough Syrup

Cold & Flu season is epic this year. It seems as if everyone I know, including myself have been battling with some sort of illness this season. Which brings me to this post “Homemade Cough Syrup”. Now back in the day good ole’ grandma would serve us up a concoction that consist of some type of whiskey. Yeah I said it whiskey. Believe you me it put us right on to sleep. And for a few hours I might add. LOL. Anywho, this recipe is just as great, All-Naturale, 3 ingredients & alcohol-free. So make up a batch today. You’ll thank me later!

Here’s What You Need:

1½ cups organic raw honey
½ cup organic extra virgin olive oil
1-5 organic lemons, juiced (the more the better)

Instructions:

Add honey, olive oil and lemon juice to a small pot. Stir to combine ingredients.
Heat over medium heat just until steaming, continue stirring.
Remove from heat and let cool.
Place into a mason jar with a lid.
Store in the refrigerator.
Take 1-2 tablespoons as needed or simply add some to a cup of hot tea.
