Black Couple Denied Wedding At Mississippi Church

An African-American couple attending a predominantly white Baptist church in Jackson, Miss., nearly had their dream of a church wedding dashed when members of the congregation demanded that the nuptials be held elsewhere because of their race.

“The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church,” Charles Wilson told local news station WAFB-TV.

Wilson and his wife, commenting on how the Rev. Stan Weatherford of First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs decided to perform their wedding ceremony at a different church, said racism was to blame.

“I feel like it was blatant racial discrimination,” Wilson told the Clarion-Ledger.

“He had people in the sanctuary that were pitching a fit about us being a black couple,” said Te’Andrea Wilson. “I didn’t like it at all, because I wasn’t brought up to be racist. I was brought up to love and care for everybody.”

Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson are not members of FBC of Crystal Springs, but had been regular attendees, with Mrs. Wilson having family ties to the congregation. Her father used to attend the church and she has an uncle who was a custodian there.

“Prior to this, I had been telling people how nice they were here,” Charles Wilson said. “It makes you re-evaluate things. We were doing everything right. We wanted to get married.”

The Wilsons did get married on July 21 as planned, just not in the church where they had hoped to hold the ceremony.

No black couple has ever been married at First Baptist Church of Crystal Cathedral. Pastor Weatherford has said that members would be holding meetings to see how to go forward to avoid future situations similar to the one involving the Wilsons.

According to insiders at the 150-year-old First Baptists Church of Crystal Springs, about five or six people had approached Weatherford about the planned ceremony after witnessing a rehearsal at the church two days before the Saturday wedding.

Wilson only learned after the fact that it was reportedly a handful of people who challenged having the ceremony held at the church. He insisted that Weatherford should have pushed back instead of giving in to congregants’ demands.

“If you’re for Christ, you can’t straddle the fence,” he told the Clarion-Ledger. “He knew it was wrong.”

Weatherford, calling himself a peacemaker, said he felt it necessary to comply with requests to move the wedding ceremony elsewhere.

“I was just trying to think about a win-win,” the pastor explained. “The thing is, I’m a peacemaker, and sometimes because I’m a peacemaker it gets me in trouble. The thing about it is this: I love the people of our church and that’s the bottom line.”

Weatherford insisted his primary concerns were keeping peace at the church and making sure the Wilsons could enjoy their wedding day.

“I didn’t want to have a controversy within the church, and I didn’t want a controversy to affect the wedding of Charles and Te’Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day,” the pastor told a local news station.

Others have suggested that Weatherford was essentially bullied into performing the wedding ceremony elsewhere and that the dissenting members do not represent the entire congregation.

“Some individuals intimidated the pastor and created a situation that had him in a bind and he was trying to do the best he could to work it out,” church attendee Bob Mack told WLBT-TV.

African-Americans in Jackson who have visited the church or have relationships with its members have defended it against claims of racism.

Church members also have apologized to the Wilsons and the local black community, denying that their church is home to a racist congregation.

Barbara Marck, a member of First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, said the church’s image has been overshadowed by a few bad apples.

“We have been portrayed as a racist church, we’re not! We welcome anybody that wants to come through those doors,” she said.

The Rev. Jim Futral, executive director of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, said the situation at FBC of Crystal Springs was a “sad thing.”

“It’s not reflective of the spirit of the Lord and Mississippi Baptists,” he said. “It’s just a step backward. … It’s a sad thing.”

Saying much progress had been made in the denomination, Futral admitted that this step was definitely “one backward.”

The racism row comes just one month after the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant body in in the U.S., elected its first African-American president, the Rev. Frank Luter of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans, La.

WAVERLY, Ga. is a coastal Georgia town that is home to the Horse Stamp Inn. The bed-and-breakfast is nestled on a secluded property that houses dramatic trees, expansive green fields, a rustic horse bar and an artesian fresh water pond.

It was the dream of owners Kris and Tom Hutcheson to one day own a bed-and-breakfast inn. Once the sprawling property became available, the couple jumped at the chance to transform it into a getaway for those looking for a quiet getaway.

Said Tom: “It’s very serene, tranquil and peaceful,” he said. “It’s close enough to cities like Jacksonville, Savannah, and Atlanta to be one-day trips.”

The Horse Stamp Inn offers five bedrooms along with a full Southern-style breakfast that is made with fresh eggs straight from the chicken coop. Opening the inn has been a labor of love for the Hutchesons. Kris and Tom attended to every detail when they were getting it ready for its debut.

During a tour of the lodge, Kris pointed out the features of the B&B.

During a tour of the Sea Biscuit room, she said it is the largest room in the inn and, “is the only one with access to the top veranda,” adding that it provides a place for guests to “relax, have fun and reconnect.”

The owners said they hope their inn provides some peace of mind to guests who visit.

“Life can be busy and if we can take some of that load (so that a guest) feels like they’ve really relaxed and leave here with a good feeling and feel ready to go back out and hit it again then we’ve accomplished our job,” Tom said.

Don’t Delay

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”  (Psalm 119:60, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria Osteen
Isn’t it interesting how easy it is to put things off? We plan on doing something. We have good intentions. We just plan to do it later. “One day I’m going to start exercising. One day I’m going to get my finances in order. One day I’m going to forgive that person who hurt me.” The problem with this kind of thinking is that “one day” never comes. There will always be some reason to keep delaying it.

Is there something in your heart that you know you need to do? Maybe God has been dealing with you, and you keep putting it off. You think, “As soon as I get through this busy season, then I’ll spend more time with my family. As soon as the price of gas goes down, then I’ll start tithing my income. As soon as my child gets out of diapers, then I’m going to get my family back in church.” But friend, good intentions don’t equal obedience. The quicker you do what you feel down in your spirit, the happier you’re going to be. Don’t let unfinished business keep you from God’s best. Step out. Obey His voice and walk in the blessing He has for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for Your patience and grace toward me. Search my heart. Show me the way to go. I choose to obey Your voice quickly and honor You in all that I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Porter House Breakfast Burritos

We love breakfast here in the Porter House. So much so that sometimes we have it for dinner. I Know Right. Anywho, Being a Chef, a Baker and a Foodie I loathe the Food Network. And one of my all time faves is Ree Drummond A.K.A Pioneer Woman. So when you combine Ree Drummond + Breakfast together you get AWESOMENESS! That’s where the Breakfast Burrito comes into play. Now dont get me wrong Ree’s recipe is great, but I think it takes a lot of time. So like always I remixed it and you know what Sweetie and I love my version just as much. And it’s quick & easy!

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. Mild Pork Sausage
1 Pkg. Simply Potatoes Hash Browns
8 to 12 Large eggs
1/4 cup milk
2 cups of shredded cheese
1/2 onion, diced
1/2 bell pepper, diced
salt and pepper to taste
1 to 2 pkg. flour (burrito size) tortillas

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Saute diced onions and bell peppers.
2. Add ground sausage to onion/pepper mixture. Brown until done; Drain on a paper towel.
3. Cook hash browns in the same pan.
4. While the hash browns are cooking – In a large mixing bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper.
5. Now add the browned sausage mixture back to the pan with the cooked hash browns.
6. Next add the eggs to the sausage mixture and cook until the eggs are done, stirring gently.
7. After eggs are done & everything is incorporated – lay a tortilla on a flat surface. Place egg mixture in the middle of tortilla. Top with cheese. Fold both sides inward. Next fold over the end closest to you and begin to roll into a burrito.
8. Serve with salsa, sour cream, or plain. Your choice.

*Chef’s Note – This recipe makes alot of burritos. So for the extra leftovers wrap them individually in plastic wrap and place in a freezer ziploc bag. When you are ready to eat one just take it out and warm it up in the microwave. Perfect for that Breakfast On The Go!

Put The Lime In The Coconut Cupcakes

I live in the land of Key Lime.  And being that Key Lime pie is my favorite pie its all rainbows and pink unicorns with me.  I have encountered all sorts of recipes. From sweet to savory; they are by the boat loads. Here is one that will satisfy the sweet tooth but pack a punch of tartness with the surprise Key Lime center. It’s just like eating a Ray Of Sunshine 🙂

INGREDIENTS

for the Key Lime curd:
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup Key Lime juice, fresh or bottled
4 TBSP unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into chunks

for the coconut cupcakes:
1 box white cake mix
1/4 c. oil
3 eggs
1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream
1 (15.5 oz) can cream of coconut

for the frosting:
8 oz. cream cheese, room temperature
5-6 cups powdered sugar
4 TBSP milk
Angel Flake coconut

INSTRUCTIONS

Make the Key Lime curd:
In a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan, whisk together the eggs, egg yolk and sugar for one minute. Whisk in the Key Lime juice until well combined.

Place the mixture over medium-low heat and whisk constantly until thickened, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in the butter, one chunk at a time until melted and incorporated.

Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl. Let cool slightly. Press a piece of plastic wrap onto the curd and place in the refrigerator overnight.

Make the cupcakes:
Line 28-30 muffin cups with liners. Preheat oven to 350.

With an electric mixer, mix all of the ingredients on low speed until combined. Scrape down the sides and bottom of bowl. Increase speed to medium-high and beat for 2 minutes.

Scoop into cupcake liners and bake 18-20 minutes, or until the cupcakes spring back when touched lightly with a finger. Cool in the pan 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely on wire racks.

Make the frosting:
In a bowl of an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese until softened and fluffy. Add 5 cups of powdered sugar and the milk. Beat on low until combined, then on medium until smooth and creamy. If the frosting is too thin for spreading, add the remaining cup of powdered sugar. Set aside.

Fit a pastry bag with a medium-size tip, such as a Wilton 4B star, and fill with the lime curd. Press the tip into the cooled cupcakes and squeeze. You’ll see the cupcakes plump up…that’s what you want. Stop squeezing, remove the tip and repeat for the rest of the cupcakes.

Top each cupcake with a generous amount of frosting and smooth with an offset spatula. Sprinkle on the coconut. Serve immediately, or store the cupcakes in the refrigerator and let them sit at room temperature for several minutes before serving.

*CHEF’S NOTE – The lime curd will fill about 16-18 cupcakes; Leave some unfilled for people who are afraid of “curd.”

Our Daily Bread – Recall Notice

READ: Acts 3:13-21

Repent . . . that your sins may be blotted out. —Acts 3:19

In 2010, auto manufacturers recalled a staggering 20 million cars in the US for various defects. The thought of such a large number of defective cars on the road is startling enough. But what is more disturbing is the apathy of some owners. In one instance, the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety warned owners, “It’s a free repair. Get it done. It may save your life.” Yet, despite the risk to their own lives, 30 percent never responded.

Likewise, many ignore God’s “recall notice” to the entire human race. Unlike a defect found in automobiles, the moral defect of the human race is not the Maker’s fault. He made everything “very good” (Gen. 1:31), but people’s sin ruined it. God’s offer to us is “repent . . . that your sins may be blotted out” (Acts 3:19).

God offers not just a free repair of the human heart but a replacement of it (Ezek. 36:26; 2 Cor. 5:17). Though the offer costs us nothing (Eph. 2:8-9), it cost God the life of His only Son Jesus Christ. “[Jesus] bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).

Don’t ignore the Lord’s call. The free and permanent remedy offered by God for your spiritual defect will save your life! —C. P. Hia

The heart of man is stained by sin,
From Adam’s fall this has been true;
Yet God in Christ can make a change—
Through faith in Him we are made new. —Fitzhugh

For a new start, ask God for a new heart.

Love Jesus First

by Joyce Meyer posted July 30, 2012

Teacher, [You are essentially and perfectly morally] good, what must I do to inherit eternal life [that is, to partake of eternal salvation]? — Mark 10:17

In today’s Scripture a young man asked Jesus the question above and Jesus responded: “You know the commandments: Do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honor your father and mother” (Mark 10:19).

The man replied to Jesus that he had obeyed all the commandments, for as long as he could remember. What happened next is extremely important: “And Jesus, looking upon him, loved him . . .” (Mark 10:21, emphasis mine).

Jesus is about to give this man an instruction because He loved him: ”You lack one thing; go and sell all you have and give [the money] to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come [and] accompany Me.”

Many people do not like this verse because they do not understand the heart of love behind it. They wonder, “Does God want to make us sell everything we have and give the proceeds to the poor in order to serve Him?” He would only ask us to do that if what we had was standing in the way of our being obedient to God. The point of this parable is that we should love Jesus first. We must love Him more than we love our “stuff,” which was not the case with the man in the story.

If you have a job that keeps you from serving God, find another job. If you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend who doesn’t want you to love God first, find someone else. If you really want a deeper walk with God, you may have to sacrifice some things that are keeping you from it.

Love God Today: Is anything standing between you and God? Make the situation right today.

Peace, Be Still

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”  (Mark 4:39, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria  Osteen
What do you do when the storms of life seem to be raging against you? One time Jesus was with His disciples in a boat out on the water when they encountered a great storm. The disciples were very afraid but Jesus, on the other hand, was fast asleep. When the disciples woke Him up to see if He could help them, Jesus got up and simply spoke to the storm, “Peace! Be still.” And the seas were calm again.

When difficult times come, you don’t have to be overwhelmed by the waves of worry or fear. Just as Jesus stood up and spoke to the storm, you have power in your words, too. As a believer, the Bible tells us that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you. That means God’s miracle-working power is on the inside of you. He’s given you His authority to declare peace over your home, over your mind, and over your family. Remember, no matter what storms may come against you, the Greater One lives on the inside of you, and He’ll empower you to live in victory in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father in heaven, thank You for filling me with Your Holy Spirit and for giving me Your authority here on earth. Today I declare peace over every area of my life and thank You for working things out for my good in Jesus’ name.
